April 14 • 6:00 pm8:00 pm

Join us Tuesday, April 14th for a screening of Anurima Bhargava’s 2025 documentary Teaching America.

High school students and teachers join forces to fight for African-American studies, after the state of Arkansas threatens to shut their classes down. The in-classroom testimony of a movement sparked by the unflinching desire to learn that crosses boundaries and generations. The film will be followed by a discussion led by youth leaders from the Chicago Freedom School and all proceeds will go towards supporting their work.

About the Film

Teaching America honors the high school students and teachers who stood united—embracing joy, dignity, brilliance, and love—when the state of Arkansas threatened to shut their Advanced Placement African American Studies classes down. The film captures a powerful moment in America: a testament to wisdom, boundless curiosity, and an unshakable desire to learn that crosses boundaries and generations—in a time of forced erasure of our history, culture, and humanity.

About the Series

Haymarket Books is proud to present the next installment in our community film series: Films for a Changing World. We envision this community film series to be a place for people to come together in community during this volatile political moment. In times like these, our struggle to change the world can feel even more difficult to sustain and we hope these events will be a space to share a collective cultural experience and connect with one another.
